Art & the Synagogue - Seudah & Talk with Rebecca Harris, February 17

Is there a 'Jewish way' of looking at art? A creative and intellectual life is informed by the cultural and historical narratives we associate ourselves with, as well as the daily intellectual and emotional experiences that shape us as individuals. Our experiences in synagogue provide an opportunity to rethink and reposition our way of looking at art. This discussion will examine art historical interpretations and our own responses. It will focus on visual and non-visible elements in art, while taking ideas from philosophy and literature to consider female representations, masks, and other such topics, as we engage with the stories, imagery and ideas associated with the festival of Purim.

Rebecca has worked within a number of arts organisations, including Modern Painters Magazine, the Hauser & Wirth art gallery, and as a researcher and writer for the Victoria & Albert Museum and Tate Archive. She has taught in a number of academic environments, worked independently on educational projects as well as curated shows of contemporary artists. Rebecca has a degree in Art History from UEA, an MA in Curating and an MPhil in Art Theory from Goldsmiths College, University of London. She is currently planning the development of her PhD research through new writing and performance, including recent talks at JW3 and New Stoke Newington Synagogue.
