Tisha B'Av and the Temple in Jewish Thought- a 5-part series with Rabbi Joel
Our summer series with Rabbi Joel is inspired by Tisha B'Av (the 9th of Av, this year 23 July), when we mourn the destruction of the two Temples and the exile of Jews from the Land of Israel. The series will take place before, during, and after the three-week mourning period from the Fast of Tammuz to Tisha B'Av, known as Bein ha-Metsarim (“Between the Straits”) or just “The Three Weeks” (this year 2–23 July).
In this series we will look at the meaning of the Temple in Jewish thought and the implications of its loss. What did the Temple represent for ancient Israelites and later Jews? What changed when it was destroyed, and what motivated subsequent aspirations for its re-building?
This series started on June 16th. Click here to see the recordings
The Choreography of Jewish Prayer - a 3-part series with Rabbi Joel
Our prayer invariably involves movement: standing, sitting, bowing, taking steps, etc. In this short series we will begin to explore some selected aspects of the choreography of Jewish prayer. As well as exploring some details of our choreography we will spend some time thinking about the nature of movement in ritual in general and its role in shaping human consciousness.
This series ended on March 24th, but click here to see the recordings
A Journey Through Cinema
Each week, join KNM member Gabi Peretz for a cinematic journey. Monday evenings at 7:30, on Zoom, starting on Nov 24th. We'll be exploring some of the greatest films ever made, beginning in the landmark year of 1939. Each session will look at the most significant films of the year, along with their cultural and historical context, with discussion and a vote to decide which film truly deserves to be Best Picture. This is your chance to correct the mistakes made at Oscars and BAFTAs past, discover the masterpieces you may have missed, and argue politely but passionately, about what makes a cinema classic.
